Sedation Dentistry in Thousand Oaks

Here at Laura Fathi D.D.S we realize that dental fear or anxiety can be very real and disabling. Dr. Laura Fathi in Thousand Oaks offers anxious patients sedation dentistry with conscious sedation to help them receive the dental treatment they need without anxiety.

The use of sedation dentistry offers teens and adults a safe and comfortable dental experience, which can relieve their anxiety and psychological fears about visiting the dentist.

What is conscious sedation?

While several types of dental sedation exist, most people associate oral conscious sedation with sedation dentistry. At Laura Fathi D.D.S. our oral conscious sedation works as both an anti-anxiety medication and a sedative to help you feel more relaxed and comfortable during the entire visit.

Why do people choose sedation dentistry?

The most common reason for providing sedation dentistry is fear or anxiety. That fear is very difficult to overcome, and is often amplified the longer you avoid receiving treatment. To calm the nerves and allow you to receive the required treatment, oral sedation therapy may be an excellent option for you.

Sedation can be useful if:

  • You want help to relax for your treatment
  • You feel sedation would allow the dentist to treat you more comfortably
  • You fear the actual procedure itself (i.e. needles, extractions) especially if you know that the fear would still exist in the presence of an empathetic dentist and adequate pain-control
  • You know your fears may be irrational and want to learn to manage them to improve your oral health

What to expect with sedation dentistry

At your Initial consultation, we will look at your medical history, your anxiety level, and any current medications you are taking. Based on this information, and your needed dental treatment, we can then determine if you are a suitable candidate for conscious sedation.

Once Dr. Fathi has determined your suitability she will administer conscious sedation. This will be in tablet form and will be taken orally prior to your dental appointment and you are advised to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.

What does conscious sedation feel like?

While sedation dentistry can have a variety of effects based on the sedative, most patients who take oral conscious sedation prior to treatment report feeling drowsy and relaxed, yet still conscious. While your central nervous system is sedated; your breathing, reflexes, and ability to respond to verbal and physical stimulation remain intact.

Side effects of conscious sedation and recovery time

Side effects from conscious sedation are minimal, and in minor cases some patients may experience dry mouth, nausea or hiccups. The remainder of the day should be taken off to recover. Be sure to stay hydrated and drink lots of fluids.
