How to whiten teeth

In today’s society, we all want a whiter, brighter smile. That is why some people decide to undergo teeth whitening treatments to improve the look of their smile.

Well, what is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the method of applying a bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide to the tooth, which removes both internal discolourations and surface spots the tooth has built up over time.

Teeth-whitening products

There are a number of different ways to whiten your teeth, from over-the-counter whitening products that assist in removing surface stains, to whitening treatments conducted within your dental practice. These procedures can assist in achieving a brighter and whiter smile.

Teeth whitening can be achieved a number of ways, depending on your individual preference and budget. In practice whitening ran by a trained dentist is the most effective form of whitening, although further whitening treatments are necessary as your teeth may become discoloured again and develop new blots over time. Moreover, a custom mouthpiece can be formed for you by your dentist and used at home. This custom mouthpiece can be worn overnight over a specified period of time or for several hours a day to effectively brighten your smile. Although it is proven to not be as effective as in practice whitening conducted by your dentist at home whitening can also produce dramatic effects. When purchasing over-the-counter whitening goods it is recommended that you talk to your dentist before buying these products as they may be harmful to your teeth and overall health and wellbeing.

Not everyone’s teeth are appropriate for whitening, the process may cause further damage to your gums and teeth if they are not in a healthy state before you undergo whitening treatments. Teeth-whitening treatments typically present no serious threat if done correctly, although if whitening products are used incorrectly serious damage may occur, including:

  • Increased tooth susceptibility
  • Irregular coloured teeth
  • Diminished enamel strength

The best way to whiten teeth naturally

If teeth whitening is not for you, but you are looking for an alternative to way to whiten and brighten your smile then listen up. There are several ways to maintain your smile, naturally. The key to better and healthier looking teeth is rather easy, just keep up good oral health. It’s that straightforward, although it might seem a little too easy for your liking. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth , chewing sugar-free gum daily after meal consumption, drinking water throughout the day, consuming a diet that is reasonable and visiting your dentist regularly. Individuals should look to avoid common foods and beverages that stain teeth, including, in addition to maintaining good oral health:

  • Coffee or tea
  • Hot foods

Additionally, unsightly spots are also caused by smoking cigarettes on teeth which may be extremely difficult to eliminate.

When it comes to achieving a healthier, brighter and whiter smile, look no further than Dr. Laura Fathi D.D.S.

Biomimetic Dentistry Thousand Oaks CA

 Biomimetic Dentistry Thousand Oaks CA

Biomimetic dentistry is the practice of restoring teeth without causing long-term structural damage. Find out more from Laura Fathi D.D.S., your local Thousand Oaks dentist.

When restoring teeth, advanced dentists have found that innovative biomimetic dentistry techniques can be implemented to:

  • Conserve natural tooth structure
  • Minimize tooth sensitivity
  • Out-live alternative restorations
  • Preserve the tooth’s root canals

Biomimetic dentistry vs. traditional restorations

We all know that tooth pain can make life miserable. But here is the problem with traditional dental approach; the tooth is drilled, the decay is removed, then the cavity is filled with either traditional white filling or amalgam filling.

Did you know traditional white fillings can shrink?

The change in shape can allow bacteria to spread, causing decay. And metal fillings can expand; causing cracks. This could mean more pain and more cost with less and less tooth as you go from a filling, to a root canal, to dental implants or a bridge or even dentures.

Now after a number of dental procedures that has cost you thousands, your tooth is gone.

Is there another way to restore teeth that can stop the progression of dental restorations?

Biomimetic dentistry is the practice of restoring teeth without causing long-term structural damage.

How biomimetic dentistry works:

Like traditional dentistry, Dr. Laura Fathi will examine x-rays and make a plan for your tooth. But rather than extensively drilling, we prefer a combination of advanced technologies to gently clean away the decay and bacteria and leave you with as much of your natural tooth as possible.

Once the decay is removed, we will seal it off from bacteria with super strong bonding and materials that hold up with day-to-day use. These advanced materials actually mimic the biological structure of your tooth. They look, feel, move and flex the same way as a natural tooth does.

Dr. Laura Fathi

Teeth move around, they bend, and they are placed under tremendous amounts of pressure when in use. Biomimetic dentistry uses innovative materials to restore the appearance, feel and function of natural teeth in order to replicate the tooth’s organic characteristics.

With nature as her guide, Dr. Fathi practices biomimetic dentistry to better duplicate the natural tendencies of teeth. All organic characteristics of the tooth must be taken into account to ensure the restoration is strong and long-lasting.

Biomimetic Dentistry Thousand Oaks CA

Keep more of your natural tooth, save on future extensive treatment, and keep your own beautiful natural smile. Biomimetic dentistry has proven to be effective in the treatment of tooth decay.

Your smile is your greatest asset. With the range of cosmetic dentistry options available for you there is no need to remain unhappy with your smile. Some of the cosmetic dentistry treatments available at Laura Fathi D.D.S. treatments include:

Teeth Whitening

Has your morning coffee taken a toll on your teeth? The foods and drinks we consume can have the potential to stain our teeth, often leaving them yellowed and dull. Coffee, tea and red wine are the usual suspects, however soft drinks especially cola, sports drinks, and foods such as berries, sweets and sauces contribute to discoloring too.

At Laura Fathi D.D.S. we understand that dull, yellow or stained teeth can have a dramatic impact on the way you look and feel. We offer a range of teeth whitening options to our patients so that you can gain back your brighter, whiter smile.

Teeth whitening is a gentle dental procedure. It requires a preparation period and then a short 45 minute bleaching session where you can relax and watch television or listen to music to make the time more comfortable. We also offer take home options where you will be fitted with a teeth whitening tray, individually molded to your teeth. This can be worn over night while you sleep so you can wake up to a transformed smile.

Veneers

Are your teeth cracked, chipped, discolored, or a combination of all of these problems? Porcelain veneers cover up any inconsistencies and will dramatically improve the appearance of your smile. Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are individually placed on each of your teeth; matching their size and position to give the appearance of a straighter, whiter, more perfect smile. Veneers also add strength and durability to your existing natural teeth.

The team at Laura Fathi D.D.S. are proud to offer our patients the Itero Digital Scanner in the place of messy and uncomfortable impressions. The Itero Digital Scanner gives our patients a gentle dental experience; we simply scan your teeth and send the impression to the lab. This option is precise and accurate as well as far more comfortable.

Teeth Implants

Losing a tooth can be extremely distressing for our patients. Whether this occurs through an injury, decay or the tooth is surgically removed, a tooth implant can give patients the confidence and health benefits of a natural tooth.

When a tooth is lost your mouth and jaw will begin to change. The jaw bone will recede as it is no longer bonded to the tooth, your face may begin to look aged and you may experience problems with speech and chewing properly. A tooth implant is a permanent solution that addressed each of these concerns.

Implants are made up of a titanium post that is inserted into your gum, acting as the root of the tooth. A crown or false tooth is then attached to replicate the look and function of the missing tooth.

What causes receding gums?

what causes receding gums

Find out what causes receding gums and the pinhole technique for gingival recession treatment. No sutures required with Dr. Laura Fathi in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Receding gums can affect people of all ages. There are a number of different causes behind the condition. Discover what causes receding gums, the symptoms of gingival recession and the pinhole gum rejuvenation technique to resolve gum recession with Dr. Laura Fathi.

What causes receding gums?

  • Hard toothbrushes/aggressive brushing – using a hard toothbrush and brushing your teeth aggressively can greatly damage the gums and even the enamel.
  • Poor oral hygiene habits – if you are not flossing your teeth you are missing out on cleaning around 40% of each tooth. Flossing and brushing properly is vital for your oral health.
  • Tobacco products – cigarettes, snus and other tobacco products can cause irreversible harm to your gums.
  • Bruxism (habitual teeth grinding) – the extra force exerted when people clench and grind their teeth can cause the gums to recede.
  • Periodontal disease – periodontal disease if often a progression of gingivitis. Periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss, bone degeneration, receding gums, bacterial infection and more.

The best way to take care of your smile and avoid further gum recession is to use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, visit the dentist every six months. If your gums have already receded or you are concerned about tooth sensitivity, the Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique could be the appropriate treatment to restore your smile.

What is the Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique?

The Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique is the latest and greatest technique that is a less invasive method of resolving gum recession and helping patients with tooth sensitivity and aesthetics.

The treatment involves a little pinhole that allows access for an instrument to gently release the gum tissue. Once the gums are repositioned, we hold the new position in place with collagen fibers. 6 weeks later the collagen fibers will dissolve and the gums will reattach into the new position.

Before and after Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation with the man behind the treatment, Dr. Chao, as seen on The Doctors

Can you die from sleep apnea?

Sleep Apnea Thousand Oaks | Can you die from sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea has been shown to cause some pretty dangerous conditions.

Find out how it can be behind serious conditions and have grave consequences if left untreated with Dr. Laura Fathi from Laura Fathi D.D.S. in Thousand Oaks CA.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder where a person suffers from shallow breathing or has pauses between breaths during sleep. In the majority of cases, patients are not aware of the condition because the pauses in breath won’t always wake them.

There are 3 different types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea or OSA is the most common of the three. Although the three types of sleep apnea are thought to have different causes, they are all known to cause people to stop breathing during sleep. People who suffer from sleep apnea may stop breathing hundreds of times during sleep and it may be for a full minute or even longer at a time.

Can you die from sleep apnea?

The sleep disorder sleep apnea is considered a life-threatening condition. Left untreated, sleep apnea has been linked to the occurrence of:

  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • drowsy driving
  • diabetes
  • stroke

If you are one of the 18 million American adults who suffer from sleep apnea, one or more of the above conditions could already be affecting you. Poor sleep and lack of oxygen to the brain at night can have devastating affects to your health and livelihood and consequently could lead to loss of life.

How can I tell if I have sleep apnea?

There has always been a link between oral health and general health of patients over the years. If you think you or someone you love may have sleep apnea, here are some of the tell-tale signs to look out for:

  • Snoring
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Bouts of awakening during the night
  • Dry mouth in the morning
  • Headaches
  • Obesity

Other things like underlying health issues can also be caused by lack of healthy rest. Daytime sleepiness and snoring may not only be affecting you. If you suffer from daytime sleepiness, you could be putting yourself and your family at risk when driving automobiles. If snoring is a common symptom of your condition you may be interrupting the sleeping patterns of your family as well.

It is important to also understand that you don’t necessarily have to be a victim of any of the above symptoms to be diagnosed with sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Thousand Oaks

Sleep apnea is more frequently a condition that affects men than women but that doesn’t mean that women are exempt from the condition. Here at Laura Fathi D.D.S. we offer Sleep Apnea Examinations for patients who are concerned about the condition. Neuromuscular Dentistry

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is responsible for opening and closing the mouth, chewing, swallowing, breathing, talking, yawning and kissing. Patients are often feeling a range of symptoms due to undiagnosed temporomandibular joint disorder.

Gum Disease

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infections in the gums. Dr. Laura Fathi believes that oral conditions like gum disease need immediate attention. Diagnosed early, gum disease can be treated quite quickly, but if left for too long it can become a dangerous condition for the patient.

General Dentistry

For healthy teeth for a lifetime, a good oral hygiene routine and diet needs to be in place. We also recommend regular check-ups every six months for an assessment, scale and clean between treatments.

Biomimetic Dentistry

Biomimetic dental treatments are considered a more natural solution to restoring teeth. Rather than taking away too much of the tooth’s natural structure, this type of dentistry is minimally invasive so it aims to conserve more of the natural tooth and rebuild upon it.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry uses technology to provide peace of mind for patients who have a fear of the dentist by putting them to sleep prior to their treatment. Dental anxiety is a common phobia that can be eased with kindness, information, gentle dentistry and care.

What are the benefits of Invisalign aligners?

Benefits-of-Invisalign Thousand Oaks CA

How do you feel about your smile? At Laura Fathi D.D.S., Dr. Fathi and her dedicated team of professionals provide Invisalign as a discreet solution to crooked and misaligned teeth.

Patients often feel that once they hit a certain age, having braces is no longer an option. Thankfully though, the creators of the Invisalign aligner system have found a way to straighten teeth without the need for awkward metal brackets and wires.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

benefits-of-invisalgn

Invisalign has a number of benefits. Here are just a few:

1.       Invisalign has no brackets or wiring

This is probably the most obvious benefit. Invisalign trays are fabricated using a strong medical grade plastic. They have no wires, no metal brackets to hold them in place.

2.       Invisalign is custom fitted and built for comfort

The trays are custom designed to fit your smile. This makes them relatively comfortable and gentle against your teeth. The treatment uses a number of trays to slowly alter the position of your teeth.

3.       There are no meal restrictions with Invisalign

Invisalign isn’t attached to your teeth. This means that the treatment is removable so that when you eat with Invisalign you can simply remove the trays. Traditional braces tend to catch food particles, causing it to get caught in the teeth and metal work of the braces. They can also be damaged by harder foods which can lead to the need for costly repairs.

4.       Invisalign is removable for special functions

Do you have a party coming up or perhaps a wedding? Invisalign is the perfect orthodontic option for situations like these. Simply slip it off for the photos and enjoy sharing your beautiful braces-free smile.

Invisalign gives you the freedom to do the things you enjoy without embarrassment

Dr. Fathi uses advanced 3-D imaging software to create the Invisalign aligners. The treatment works by gently moving your teeth into place using a series of trays. For the treatment to be most effective, it is important that you wear the treatment day and night – before and after mealtime and when sleeping. The treatment is appropriate for adults who have tooth alignment and crowding concerns. For more complex jaw alignment and bite problems, an alternative may be necessary.

Teeth whitening after treatment

Your smile can be one of your most valuable assets – as long as you take care of it! For extra effect, enhance the whiteness of your smile post Invisalign with teeth whitening treatment.

Why you want to replace your missing tooth

Dental implants provide health benefits a dental bridge cannot

The difference between a dental bridge and a dental implant treatment is the latter is better for your health.

A dental bridge is two dental crowns fused with a prosthetic tooth: it requires two healthy teeth to be shaved down and prepared for the crowns. While a dental bridge replaces the missing crown and reduces the risk of your teeth becoming crooked, a dental bridge does not look after the health of your jaw.

A dental implant does.

A dental implant is a titanium rod inserted into your jaw at the site of the missing tooth root. Then a dental crown is attached to the dental implant.

Why you should replace a missing tooth

When you lose a tooth your jawbone starts to atrophy. And when this happens your jawbone does not grow back. The longer you wait the more jawbone atrophies and eventually it can cause further tooth loss.

While a dental bridge will provide some stimulation to your jawbone it cannot compare to the support you’ll receive from a dental implant.

This is because an implant fuses with your jawbone. So there is the same stimulation as if there was a natural tooth.

A missing tooth causes problems

Aside from jawbone atrophy, other problems include crooked teeth and misaligned bite.

If you don’t replace a missing tooth, the teeth on either side of the gap start to try closing the gap. Hence crooked teeth. Crooked teeth can cause further problems such as a misaligned bite. A misaligned bite can cause headaches, neck and shoulder pain.

You could go through all this, or you could replace a missing tooth

With replacing a missing tooth you have two options: dental bridge or dental implant treatment.

At Laura Fathi’s dental practice in Thousand Oaks, we recommend dental implant treatment where applicable. This treatment replaces the whole tooth, looking after your jaw and your remaining teeth.

By applicable we mean you will need to meet certain requirements before undergoing dental implant treatment:

• You’ll need adequate jawbone density for the implant
• Relatively good oral health
• Good general health

If you are eligible for dental implant treatment one of our dentists here at Laura Fathi’s dental practice in Thousand Oaks will present you with your options.

At the end of the day the decision whether you chose dental bridges or dental implants is up to you. When you visit us for your consultation you’ll be present all the facts and the possible treatment outcomes. This way you can be fully informed about what to expect and which treatment will best suit you and your oral health.

How to straighten your smile without impacting your lifestyle

Are you looking for a way to straighten your smile without having to show metal on your teeth?

For many of patients straightening their teeth is tied in with the idea of having to have metal braces that negatively impact their lifestyle. With advances in dentistry and in orthodontics, there are now ways to straighten your teeth effectively and discreetly without impacting your lifestyle.

A discreet, effective solution for straightening your teeth

On average, straight teeth are healthier. This is because straight teeth are easier to keep clean than crooked teeth. Also, crooked teeth can adversely affect your bite which can affect your jaw as well as cause headaches.

However, much of the time people are put off by the idea of having metal braces bonded to the front of their teeth for all to see. And they know that metal braces will affect what they can eat and that the treatment will involve many trips to the dentist in order to keep their teeth healthy during the orthodontic treatment.

With treatment from Laura Fathi D.D.S you can avoid metal braces

At our Thousand Oaks dental practice we offer an effective and discreet orthodontic option. Invisalign is a fantastic method of straightening teeth for patients who don’t want to have metal on their teeth and who are looking for minimally intrusive treatment for straightening teeth.

Invisalign is a braces-free treatment. This treatment is removable so you can eat and drink what you like without worrying about damaging brackets and wires.

The Invisalign procedure

When you visit Laura Fathi D.D.S for your initial Invisalign consultation, we will assess you oral health and take scans of your teeth. The next step will be a digital treatment plan. This plan will show you what you can expect if you follow the treatment plan prescribed to you; it will also give you an idea of how many aligners you’ll need and how often each day you’ll need to wear them.

On average, you should wear your aligners for 20 hours a day. Any less and you run the risk of the treatment either not being as effective or taking longer than prescribed. Realistically, you should only remove your aligners for eating and drinking. And before you place your aligners back you will need to brush your teeth.

One of the biggest advantages of Invisalign being removable, other than being able to eat what you like, is fewer visits to the dentist. When you have traditional braces you have to visit the dentist for regular check-ups, cleans and tightening appointments. With Invisalign you visit Laura Fathi D.D.S every six weeks to get new aligners. Fewer visits to the dentist means spending less money and losing less time at appointments.

Invisalign is the most lifestyle friendly teeth straightening treatment

This virtually-invisible treatment straightens your teeth without the discomfort of metal brackets and wires. It does not prevent you from eating your favourite foods or covering your smile for photos.

If you are looking for a discreet, effective treatment to straighten your teeth, Invisalign might just be what you’re looking for. To find out more about Invisalign and what it can do for you, or to make an appointment at our Thousand Oaks dental practice, contact us today.

Restoring discolored teeth

If the colour of your teeth is what’s keeping you from smiling, we offer two great teeth whitening options: teeth whitening and dental veneers.

  1. Teeth whitening

Tooth discoloration can happen for reasons such as drinking coffee, tea, wine, sugary drinks, tobacco and chocolate. Dr. Fathi offers 3 different whitening systems to help improve the shade and color of your smile: find out more.

  1. Porcelain veneers

For teeth with minor chips, cracks porcelain veneers are a great option to cosmetically enhance your smile. Porcelain veneers are also effective for teeth where tooth whitening would be ineffective.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain which are bonded to the front of your teeth. Beneers are stain-resistant (not stain proof) and are a great option for enhancing your smile.

In order to avoid placing unpleasant impression material into patients’ mouths for 5 minutes, Dr. Fathi’s Thousand Oaks practice uses the Itero Digital Scanner. This scanner means all we need to do is scan your teeth and then email the impression to the lab.
